Who will Lift the Weight of my Problems

These days in times of pandemic all media, all individuals, social context conversations and dialogue are around how big the problem is that we are encountering.

People feel extremely helpless, resourceless and diffident with high level of vulnerability and chaos around them. How do we maintain a balance such that we do not get so dislocated and disrupted that there is absolutely no hope.

It is very natural for human beings to talk about the situations that bother them or are about a negative context. Blaming the context and cribbing about the world and the system becomes a common contention for all conversations. It just gives one a space of no choice no action and no movement. People only feel like being stuck in a trishanku from which there is no release.

This attitude also comes from people who are strong and resourceful. It has nothing to do with either being weak or resourceful. It is not whether you have more or less but is about how one responds to a situation or a context that he is part of. So what does it need in me to move from being cribber and the complainer? An individual who is able to access the situation with some bit of reflexivity, understanding and dialogue with the world. The trait of having a mind that generates solution need to be one that is responsible, sensitive and willing to take ownership of the situation. An open mind also facilitates this process. One who is willing to take risks and mistakes in life can be better problem solver.

The solution may not be the best for that particular context or problem but at least there is an effort that has gone into it.

Many times people like to escape by saying it is not my problem. Therefore then whose problem are people willing to take ownership and respond to? Often times I have done it, when the process of solving it is not stimulating enough. Only if something excites me, interest me, challenges me or evokes me, have I jumped into it.

There is also an element of diffidence in the people who are less capable, less competent or intellectually less bright.

However, I have seen that sense of responsibility does not come up only when you are on the top of the ladder in the structure. It comes with any person in the hierarchy whether he is at the top, bottom or junior most in the system.

Problem solving abilities are also tested with psychometric tests and simulations. People who score high on thede abilities are definitely considered to be more capable, more confident and more responsible in the system they are part of.

In the famous book “Who Moved My Cheese” written by “Spencer Johnson “.  It is beautifully explained the mind-set of two mice in their ability to solve a simple problem of finding the cheese at the end of the tunnel. So there is lot of literature and theory on this very basic ability of human beings. But how do I cultivate that in a proactive manner within me?

In times of Corona what we hear is from the world is Problems, Problems and Problems. How do we convert them into solutions is the challenge for each one of us.

  1. Definitely something to think about. How do we find solutions to the problems around us. Maybe, we start small and help people in our circle of influence and slowly expand to people outside. Maybe we have a small workshop of like minded people and brainstorm on what is needed at this hour and how we can provide maximum relief. Thought provoking!!

  2. One way to control Corona is by getting people vaccinated, even while every one wears masks, maintain social distancing and washing hands. Perhaps, we can help arrange vaccination drives, preferably either drive thru or large open fields. As more people get vaccinated, the virus will not be as deadly.

  3. First job to be done is to accept the situation, acknowledge that its a world-wide situation, and I am not the only one that’s affected. Next comes accepting that this situation may last for a few more years. Next comes, assessing the situation, how do I fulfill my needs and family’s needs. And once that’s in order , you think about what more can I do under these circumstances, to enrich my life, to stay healthy, to improve overall, same for family. Innovative ways are being discovered daily to, in fact take advantage of the situation. People are travelling to beautiful locations and working from guesthouses, moving from one beautiful location to another every few months.
